History of The Sedlescombe and District Garden Society
The Sedlescombe and District Garden Society, now one of the village's most flourishing groups, grew out of our country's urgent need for people to support the war effort by growing as much of their own food as possible.
Founded in 1944 as the Sedlescombe and District Allotment Association with about 40 members, it enabled members to obtain scarce. supplies of seeds, potatoes, lime and fertiliser - all necessary for a reliable supply of vegetables.
The Association continued after the war and in subsequent years changed its name several times and expanded its aims and objectives as peace time brought a more relaxed and leisure based approach to gardening.
Aims of the Society
To promote amongst members an interest in all aspects of gardening and the gardening environment through the organisation of show competitions, regular meetings and lectures, visits to places of gardening interest and other relevant activities. It seeks to maintain the rich diversity of garden plants and to increase and widen the general appeal of gardening and plant culture within the local community.
Our usual meeting place is the Village Hall where our functions include practical talks, often by well known experts, on various subjects along with practical and topical demonstrations for gardeners and the opportunity to have many gardening queries answered.
The Society publishes an Annual Show Schedule and a quarterly magazine, "The Trug". These are distributed free to members.
Society activities are also displayed on its notice boards at the Sedlescombe Post Office and the Village Hall.
Discounts on purchases at selected garden centres and nurseries are available to members.
